Managing Large Models with Configurations

QuadriSpace includes a powerful ability to setup configurations in your projects. Configurations allow you to create subgroups of your scene.

A configuration defines:

  • Visible models and parts
  • Materials applied to parts
  • Initial Location of parts

A configuration may include:

  • 1 or more exploded views
  • 1 or more parts lists
  • 1 or more illustrations

Configurations are used to:

  • Manage large projects by allowing you to create subsets of the assembly
  • Manage multiple merged models
  • Create different variants of your model, for example different product colors
  • Easily turn tools, jigs and props on and off during illustration or document creation

Independent Configurations

By default, new configurations are independent. This means that any changes you have made to materials, initial locations or suppressed parts will not be included with the new configurations.

Dependent Configurations

Dependent configurations allow you to create a new configuration that is dependent on another. In this case in changes to the original configuration would propagate through the dependent configuration.

Suppressed Parts

A configuration has a list of “suppressed” parts. These parts will not appear when you select commands like “Show All”. In fact the program for the most part will behave as if the suppressed parts do not exist. For example, when you create a parts lists, only the parts that are not suppressed for the configuration will be added to the parts list by default.

Creating an Independent Configuration

When you create a new configuration, you can choose to create it form all of the visible parts, all selected parts or all parts in the 3D model.

👍

Create an Independent Configuration from Visible Parts

  • Select the Configurations Ribbon
  • Hide parts that you do not want to be part of the configuration
  • In the Configuration Ribbon Group, click on Configurations > New Configuration from Visible Parts.
  • Enter a name for the configuration

👍

Create an independent configuration from selected parts

  • Select the Configurations Ribbon
  • Hide parts that you do not want to be part of the configuration
  • In the Configuration Ribbon Group, click on Configurations > New Configuration from Selected Parts
  • Enter a name for the configuration

👍

Create an independent configuration from all parts

  • Select the Configurations Ribbon
  • In the Configuration Group, click on Configurations > New Configuration from All Parts
  • Enter a name for the configuration

Selecting a Configuration

Selecting a configuration will display the selected configuration in the 3D view.

👍

Select a Configuration

  • To select a configuration from the Configuration Ribbon
  • Click on the 3D view that you would like to display the selected configuration in.
  • Select the Configurations Ribbon
  • Use the Configurations pull down to select the desired configuration.

Creating a Dependent Configuration

A dependent configuration will include the properties of the parent configuration plus any changes that you make to the child configuration. This is an advanced feature and if you are not sure that this is what you want, you should create an independent configuration.

👍

Create a Dependent Configuration

  • Select the Home Ribbon
  • Click on the Extended Group Properties button in the Project Group, this will bring up the Project Panel
  • In the Project Panel, find the Configuration that you desire as the parent of your new configuration
  • Right click the parent configuration and choose New Dependent Configuration

Setting up the Initial Position of Models

To set the initial position of parts in a configuration, you should use the Move Component command in the Merge Group. From a user interface perspective this works in a similar fashion to the Move Parts command for working with Exploded Views. The purpose of moving models for configuration setup is to set the initial position or merged models, jigs, tools, props, etc.

👍

Setup the initial position of models

  • Select the Configurations Ribbon
  • Use the Configurations pull down to select the Configuration that you desire to modify
  • Click Move Model (or Rotate or Scale)
